Chairman, Massachusetts Board of Higher Education and Co-Founder & Senior Advisor, Empower Schools

Chris Gabrieli has served as the Chairman of the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education (MA BHE) since 2015.  Initially appointed by Governor Charlie Baker (R), in 2023 he was re-appointed by Governor Maura Healey (D).  He is a Co-Founder and Senior Advisor of the nonprofit Empower Schools.  He is also a Lecturer at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education where he has taught for more than a decade a course on the political science of education policy change and, starting in 2023, a new course entitled Remixing Education: Innovations in Blending K12, College and Career Pathways.  In the over twenty years since he began his second career in education policy and innovation, he has co-founded multiple education non-profits, served in appointments made by three Governors of Massachusetts and the Mayor of Boston and on numerous national and local Boards including at Harvard University, Clark University and Boston University. Chris authored the book Time to Learn and is a co-author of more than twenty peer-reviewed scientific and policy papers.  He is a graduate of Harvard College and lives in Boston, MA where he and his wife Hilary raised their five children.
