In a world that constantly demands more—more efficiency, more productivity, more results—it’s easy to forget the value of pausing. Geoff Curtis, a seasoned leader in strategic communications and a Fellow of the inaugural Leadership and Society Initiative (LSI) cohort, sheds light on this often-overlooked concept in his article, “The Power of Pause.”
Geoff explores the fact that while careers are often focused on relentless forward motion, there can be benefit in taking moments of intentional pause. These moments are not signs of weakness or indecision; rather, they are opportunities for reflection, growth, and renewal.
“I have never been one for pauses – always jumping from one thing to the next (or one job to another) without any time in between,” said Geoff. “That grind was comfortable, it was my identity. I was so entrenched in my day-to-day that a pause – either short or long – just wasn’t a part of the equation. So, I decided to do something about it, to embrace what I was previously unable to embrace.”
The concept of the pause is not about stopping and is more than just taking a break. It’s about creating space for deep reflection and realigning with core values and goals. It provides the opportunity to step back from the day-to-day pressures and view life from a broader perspective.
During his own moment of reflection, Geoff was selected to join the inaugural cohort of the University of Chicago Leadership and Society Initiative, which is designed to prepare senior leaders for meaningful, productive lives after their longstanding careers.
“[LSI] proved to be the perfect pause and potential bridge from a more than 25-year career in the communications industry to something entirely different.”
As Geoff dove deeper into what his next stage could look like, he came to the following realizations:
Identity: Rediscover Who You Are
Pausing offers a powerful opportunity to reconnect with your core identity. This rediscovery of self can become the foundation for moving forward with authenticity, integrity, and purpose.
“I quickly found out that my identity is Geoff, not a chief communications officer, not a communicator, just Geoff.”
Clarity: Gain a Sharper Focus on What Matters
Taking time to pause can lead to a profound sense of clarity. By embracing moments of pause, leaders can cut through the noise and complexity of their environments, leading with a sharper, more focused perspective.
“My mind is clearer than it has ever been because I have allowed it to be. I am finally allowing myself to think.”
Appreciation: Cultivate Gratitude and Awareness
Pausing is not just about reflection; it’s also about appreciation. This is an opportunity to step out of the daily grind and acknowledge the progress that has been made, as well as the opportunities that still lie ahead.
“I am now clearly seeing the importance of appreciating and understanding the experiences and knowledge of those around me, the power in creative collaboration and the power of connection and conversation.”
Growth and Development: Embrace Continuous Learning
Pauses can provide space to reflect on past experiences, identify areas for improvement, and plan for future development. In this way, pausing becomes not just a break but a catalyst for ongoing personal and professional growth.
“Pauses are opportunities to reconnect with ourselves, our passions and our friends and loved ones, allowing us to feel more grounded.”
