Mark Gossett

Former Chief Risk Officer, Northern Trust Corporation

Mark Gossett is an accomplished financial executive with more than 42 years of experience at Northern Trust, most recently serving as Chief Risk Officer and a member of the Executive Management Committee. In that role, he was responsible for all global financial risks of the firm—including credit and trading risks—as well as all global non-financial risks, encompassing operational, cybersecurity/technology, and regulatory compliance. Mark has announced his retirement from Northern Trust and currently serves as an executive advisor to the firm.

Over the course of his career, Mark has held a variety of senior leadership roles, including Global Head of Foreign Exchange, International Chief Financial Officer, Chief Credit Officer, and Chief Operating Officer of Asset Management. He spent approximately 20% of his career based in London.

A long-standing champion of inclusion at Northern Trust, Mark has served as executive sponsor for several affinity groups, including Young Families, Military Appreciation and Assistance, and the Risk Management Diversity & Inclusion Council, helping to drive practical and transparent progress on key initiatives.

Mark grew up on a farm in Illinois and continues to manage his family’s farm today. He is passionate about the vital role agriculture plays in global economic and social well-being. In 2020, he was honored with the Award of Merit by the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences at the University of Illinois.

He is a Trustee of the Morton Arboretum in Lisle, Illinois—one of the largest arboretums in the United States—where he serves as Chair of the Audit and Risk Committee. Mark is an avid supporter of the Arboretum’s strategy, including its sustainability initiatives both locally and globally.

Mark holds an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He is also a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA).
