Susan Stone

Susan Stone is the recently retired Executive Vice President & General Counsel for CNA. one of the country’s largest commercial insurance companies. In this role, Susan led the Company’s Company’s Legal, Compliance, and Government Relations Department and served as a trusted advisor to CNA’s CEO, C Suite Executives and Board of Directors on all legal matters arising from CNA’s global business operations.  Susan also headed up the Compliance, Government Relations and ESG functions at the company.  In addition, Susan served as a Board Member for various domestic and London-based subsidiaries owned by CNA.

During her almost 40-year legal career, Susan held a number of different positions spanning law firm practice, in-house roles at public companies, government service, and teaching.   Prior to working at CNA,she served as General Counsel at Marsh LLC, where she had responsibility for all litigation, transactional, regulatory, and compliance matters for the heavily regulated insurance broking business. Prior to Marsh, Susan was an Executive Committee Member, Practice Group Head, and Partner at Sidley Austin LLP., where she practiced for over 25 years.  Earlier in her career Susan worked as a federal prosecutor at the US Attorney;s Office in the Southern District of California.  She also taught for many years as an adjunct instructor at DePaul Law School

Susan holds a bachelor’s degree from Yale University and a law degree from Harvard Law School. She has served on multiple civic and philanthropic Boards of Directors, including Steppenwolf Theatre, Erikson Institute, College Possible, WWCI/WTTW Public Television, Roosevelt University, the Auditorium Theater and the Women’s Board of the Joffrey Ballet.
