Monday – Day 1

8:30-9:30 a.m.

Welcome Breakfast

Enjoy a continental breakfast and facilitated conversation with the incoming cohort of Fellows and LSI staff.

9:30-11:00 a.m.

Introduction to LSI

This session will introduce Fellows to the overarching goals and themes of the LSI learning journey including a high-level view of the curriculum and Purpose Plan.

11:00-12:00 p.m.

Campus Tour with Executive Director of Chicago Studies

Chris Skrable, Executive Director of Chicago Studies and Experiential Learning at the College will guide LSI Fellows on a tour of campus, focused on the history Hyde Park, Woodlawn, and the role the university has played on Chicago’s South Side.

12:30-1:30 p.m.

Lunch Panel with Academic Deans

Enjoy a buffet lunch and panel discussion with academic deans including Humanities Dean Deborah Nelson, Social Sciences Dean Amanda Woodward, and Physical Sciences Dean Ka Yee C. Lee, moderated by Graham School Dean Seth Green.

1:30-2:00 p.m.

Tour of the Quadrangle Club

Fellows will be made members of the University of Chicago Quadrangle Club, which will serve as a central meeting location for independent study, one-on-one meetings, and group lunches throughout the quarter. This session will include a tour of the Quadrangle Club and overview of membership benefits.

2:30-4:00 p.m.

Socratic Method Workshop

This session will be facilitated by Kendall Sharp, Instructor in the Basic Program at the Graham School, who will introduce Fellows to the Socratic Method and best practices for small group dialogue, which will be useful for the Aspen Executive Seminar and in course discussions throughout the Fellowship year.

5:00-6:30 p.m.

LSI Fellows Dinner at Ascione Bistro

Enjoy a seated dinner and conversation with the cohort and LSI Staff at Ascione Bistro.

Tuesday – Day 2

8:30-10:00 a.m.

Overview of the Autumn Quarter

This session will provide an overview of the Autumn Quarter including details on the LSI Core Courses, writing exercises for Purpose Plan development, and process for engaging with Next Chapter Advisors, and a preview of our Autumn Immersion Days on the topic of Violence Prevention & Community Safety.

10:30-12:00 p.m.

Networking Session with Campus Partner Organizations

LSI Fellows will be introduced to a variety of campus partner organizations and ways that they might get involved with these centers, institutes, and offices to support discernment of their next chapter. We will be joined by representatives from the following:

12:30-1:30 p.m.

Cohort Lunch

Enjoy a buffet lunch and conversation with the cohort.

1:30-4:30 p.m.

Answering the Big Questions with David Brooks

This session will be facilitated by David Brooks and will introduce LSI Fellows to “the big questions” that they will seek to answer through the LSI Fellowship and beyond; questions of purpose, vocation, connection, meaning-making, and legacy.

5:00-6:30 p.m.

LSI Fellow Dinner at the Nile of Hyde Park

Enjoy a seated dinner and casual conversation with LSI Fellows and David Brooks at the Nile of Hyde Park.

Wednesday – Day 3

8:30-10:00 a.m.

IT Canvas Tutorial

This session will provide a hands-on introduction to the various online systems and tools that LSI Fellows will use throughout the Fellowship year including: My.UChicago, Canvas, UChicago Box.

10:30-12:00 p.m.

Group Photo and Headshots

Professional photographers will join our group to take individual headshots as well as a group photo of the incoming LSI Fellows.
*Professional attire is requested for all photos.

12:30-2:00 p.m.

Lunch Workshop on Freedom of Expression

This session will include a presentation by Tony Banout, the inaugural Executive Director of the Forum for Free Inquiry and
Expression. Fellows will be invited into conversation about what freedom of expression means in practice including how to embody virtues of epistemic humility, courage, respect for human dignity, and a healthy skepticism toward received wisdom.
*Please read the circulated Kalven Report and Chicago Principles in preparation for this session.

3:00-4:30 p.m.

LSI Alumni Panel and Discussion

This panel will feature members of the inaugural cohort of LSI Fellows to share lessons learned from their own fellowship experience, offer reflections on things they wished they’d known going in to make the most of their time, explore how their own next chapters are continuing to evolve, and answer your questions.

5:00-6:00 p.m.

Reception for Past and Present LSI Fellows

This reception will bring together the LSI cohorts of 2024 and 2025. Enjoy the opportunity to build connection and community with others pursuing next chapters of living and leading with purpose. Your partners are also invited to join before we all gather for the LSI Welcome Ceremony.
*Partners and spouses are welcome to attend this reception.

6:00-9:00 p.m.

LSI Welcome Ceremony

The event will bring together key members of the LSI community to formally initiate LSI Fellows into their learning journey. It will include remarks from University leadership, representatives from the LSI Cohort and alumni on the opportunity to catalyze leaders to drive meaningful impact in their next stage.
*Professional attire requested for this event.

Thursday – Day 4

8:30-7:00pm

Aspen Institute Executive Seminar

Fellows will participate in an exclusive customized Aspen Institute Seminar. The day will include lunch and dinner with the cohort.

Friday – Day 5
